The Race, Culture, and Context (RC²) lab is a research group within the Department of Psychological Sciences at Winston-Salem State University.

Our research focuses on the psychosocial, sociocultural, and contextual factors associated with health disparities and inequities among youth and young adults of African descent.

What We Do

In conducting research in the mentioned areas, RC² has collaborated, partnered with, and/or received funding from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, and The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to name a few.

Biography

Dr. Hall-Byers is a Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). She is an applied social psychologist, with an advanced degree in public health. As the Director of the RC² lab, her overarching program of research focuses on psychological, social, cultural, and contextual factors associated with health disparities and inequities among youth and emerging adults (YEAs) of African descent. A secondary line of research is exploring identity and contextual factors influencing the lived experiences of Black women in STEM fields. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health, American Psychological Association, University of California (San Francisco), and the University of North Carolina (Chapel-Hill). She is currently the Principal Investigator/Co-Principal Investigator on three NSF funded projects. Dr. Hall-Byers received numerous awards for teaching and research, and was the 2018 recipient of the WSSU Wilveria B. Atkinson Distinguished Research Award. She has a BS in Health Sciences, MPH in Maternal and Child Health, and an MA and PhD in Applied Social Psychology.
